Indie Film: Upgraded

In early 2020, I wrote a series of emails called Indie Film Upgraded. Here’s my original introduction to the series.

Let’s be honest. The business side of indie film is a raging dumpster fire of despair.

Over the years, I’ve met hundreds of indie filmmakers from around the world. You know how many are making a healthy, consistent living with their original work?

I can count them all on a single hand.

But that’s not anyone’s fault. The system itself is broken. Most of the rules we’re told play by were effective in the 90s and early 2000s. But the world has changed since then. And if we want to thrive in the 21st century, we must change too.

And that’s where Indie Film: Upgraded comes in.

Over the next 10-ish days, you'll discover an entirely new philosophy for making films you care about, and earning a living with it. This won't be conventional. It won't involve festivals, distributors, or aggregators.

Instead, you'll get a crash course in entrepreneurial thinking, and a guide for building a thriving film business in the attention economy.

Let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes, shall we?

Since writing the series, I’ve retired from the filmmaking world, and I’m not updating this website anymore. But this email series is really, really good. So I decided to pull them out and just make them public. Enjoy.
